will you do papohaku?

After you read this post, I think you  might!

Located on the island of Molokai, this three-mile stretch of beach is a beauty. Golden sand and endless waves kept me captivated and entertained for quite a while. This crescent-shaped beach is located on the north shore of the island. Hubby and I had to drive by a housing subdivision (that wasn’t) to get there. Street signs were there; paved roads were there; fire hydrants were there, even a few houses were there; but no people were there. Tall weeds were taking residence where groomed yards had been. Actually, it was kind of creepy. But drive past the subdivision and you’re moments away from a fantastic morning or relaxing afternoon experience.20150126_170153

Here’s what the park and beach have:

  • Clean restrooms
  • Sinks inside and outside the bathrooms
  • Indoor showers and changing rooms
  • Two campsites
  • Solitude
  • Endless waves
  • Picnic tables & grills (that need grates)
  • Free entrance
  • A wicked undertow
  • Ragged and smooth lava stone at the edge of the water

Want to cook on one of the grills? Make sure to bring a grate with you.

And here’s what the park and beach don’t have:

  • Good swimming/snorkeling
  • kid-friendly water or beach
  • No doors on the women’s stalls

Even with the negatives, this is a beach made for romance–big breakers, crashing waves, wild surf, beautiful blue waters. If you’re not holding hands with your special someone by the end of your beachwalk, I’d be surprised.  You’ll have this beach to yourself (or almost to yourself), so make time to visit and partake in all that Papohaku Beach Park has to offer.
