Our trip down Hana Highway in April 2014 was phenomenal. Breathtaking waterfall after waterfall to behold. However, driving Hana Highway during the dry season of January 2015 isn’t the same. Not at all.
Dry creek-bed after dry creek bed where waterfalls should have been. In the end, only two waterfalls were flowing, but Hana Highway did get us to Wai’anapanapa State Park and its spectacular black sand beach. We visited this park on our last trip, and I couldn’t wait to see it again.
The car ride on the road to Hana is still as nerve-wracking as ever, and the repaving being done in certain sections added to the driving excitement.
It’s hard enough to share this narrow, winding road with two cars on it heading in opposite directions, but add school busses and large paving trucks and…well, you get the picture. It was an experience going around every corner.
